The plan is organized around a large,
central nurse's station block, which houses medication storage, a unisex toilet, and an
independent living skills kitchen. Interior windows allow viewing of the north dining area
through the kitchen from the nurses station.
The layout allows for the facility to be divided into two units as program changes
dictate. In the meantime, continuous wandering paths are created to allow strolling of
residents around four loops. The strolling residents can be easily monitored by staff
directly from the nurses station or with the aid of closed circuit TV cameras. Doors are
magnetically held open along the paths.
Each unit utilizes a central bath, clean and soiled linen areas, and storage surrounded by
perimeter single and double resident rooms. Specific attention was given within these
rooms for direct sight lines to toilets. Each unit also houses a lounge area where
families and residents can be together in a comfortable setting. A screened porch
punctuates the southeast corner for sheltered space outside and a good view of the floral
clock to the south.
Care was taken to make sure clear views were maintained to the exterior. Venting window
units were placed on top of fixed units, moving the horizontal mullion up in elevation, to
ensure this unobstructed view .
Materials were selected for durability and a softened feel. Careful use of multi-level
adjustable lighting tailors lighting levels to the time of day and mood of the residents.
Harsh shadows were minimized through the use of frosted skylights in the south dining
area. Indirect lighting is used throughout to, again, minimize harsh shadows. |
